Travelers between Richmond and Charlottesville found this as hilarious as the locals did, eventually renaming the town in honor of the pump. Famous personalities like Thomas Jefferson, the Earl Cornwallis, the Marquis de Lafayette, General Peter Muhlenberg, and Stonewall Jackson were all recorded visitors.
